Morning Swooners :-)

This week my "can't-wait-to-read" pre-publication selections are:

Expected release date: August 26, 2014
Purchase: Amazon / Barnes and Noble

Summary from Goodreads:

For fans of Stephen King and American Horror Story, a gruesome thriller suggested by the events of the Amityville Horror.

Connor’s family moves to Amity to escape shady business deals. Ten years later, Gwen’s family moves to Amity for a fresh starts after she’s recovered from a psychotic break.

But something is not right about this secluded house. Connor’s nights are plagued with gore-filled dreams of demons and destruction. Dreams he kind of likes. Gwen has lurid visions of corpses that’s aren’t there and bleeding blisters that disappear in the blink of an eye. She knows Amity is evil and she must get her family out, but who would ever believe her?

Amity isn’t just a house. She is a living force, bent on manipulating her inhabitants to her twisted will. She will use Connor and Gwen to bring about a bloody end as she's done before. As shell do again.

Alternating between parallel narratives, Amity is a tense and terrifying tale suggested by true-crime events that will satisfy even the most demanding horror fan.

I love a good horror book and what better story to read than a semi-retelling of The Amityville Horror. That story can always bring a chill to me just thinking about it...i'm sure this will too!

REVIEW: Free Four (Divergent #1.5) by Veronica Roth

Free Four (Divergent #1.5) by Veronica Roth
Publication Date: April 23, 2012
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Source: eBook Purchased by Reviewer
Buy it at: Amazon / Barnes and Noble

My rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Synopsis (from Goodreads):

Fans of the Divergent series by No. 1 New York Times bestselling author Veronica Roth will be thrilled by this short story told from Four’s perspective.

This brief story explores the world of the Divergent series through the eyes of the mysterious but charismatic Tobias Eaton, revealing previously unknown facets of his personality, backstory and relationships.

Veronica Roth gave us a gift by creating this beautiful specimen of a man. Being able to see his thought process in comparison to Tris’ during such a powerful scene in Divergent is perfect fangirling material. Is he not just the cutest thing!?!? I mean seriously, there’s some serious swoon factor going on right now!

From his point of view we get to see how deep he really is as a person and how deep his attraction to Tris is. Plus I love that it has absolutely nothing to do with her looks. He feels connected to her on a deeper level, because they are both fighters, and strong and brave, they both understand what it means to be there and be free.  And when he says “Looking at her was like waking up” I damn near balled! That was pure perfection!

So yea, I pretty much inhaled this beautiful novella and spent an hour (ok… two) just sitting around, teary eyed, at the fact that Four isn’t real.

Excuse me while I go drown my sorrows as I say goodbye to him again!

GUEST REVIEW: Big Girl Panties by Stephanie Evanovich

Big Girl Panties by Stephanie Evanovich
Publication Date: July 9, 2013
Publisher: William Morrow
Source: Book Purchased by Reviewer
Buy it at: Amazon / Barnes and Noble
Reviewer: Doris Cedeño aka La Chiquita

My rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Synopsis (from Goodreads):

They always say that big girls don’t cry. But when the chips are down and the dip is gone, what can you do? pull up your BIG GIRL PANTIES and change your life.

Holly Brennan didn’t expect to be a widow at thirty-two. She also didn’t expect to be so big. Through her husband Bruce’s diagnosis and death, food was the one thing she could always count on. now those extra pounds make flying coach more than a little mortifying-especially since she's sitting next to Adonis himself, aka Logan Montgomery, a personal trainer to the country’s most famous pro athletes.

The Holly doesn’t make the grade on his first-impression meter, Logan finds himself intrigued by her sharp wit and keen insight-a welcome change from the beautiful bubble-headed dolls he usually dates-and impulsively offers to get her back in shape. Ready to make at least one positive change in her life, Holly agrees.

To Logan’s (and her own) surprise, Holly turns out to be a natural in the gym. Throwing herself into exercise, the read head with the blazing wit and welcoming smile slims down into a bonafide looker with killer curves-and a new kind of hunger. Soon, the easy intimacy and playful banter of their training sessions lead Logan and Holly into the bedroom where they share their most intense and steamy workouts yet.

But can a man whose whole life depends on looks commit himself to a woman who doesn’t fit his image? Not that Holly’s turning other men’s heads, does she even need Logan anymore? Are they a couple built to last…or is this sizzling affair going to burn out fast?

I came across Big Girl Panties strictly by accident, and boy am I happy that it happened. In the story we follow the main character Holly from her devastating past into her new found confidence and vigor towards life.  The book starts in a very familiar way to me because I too suffer the dread of flying coach and not knowing if the person sitting next to me will be forgiving of my extra wiggles and pleadings with the seat belt. Too often I find that if I could just not breathe for the length of the flight I may just be able to be comfortable enough to stark up a conversation with my neighbor.
Holly Brennan’s world was easy to be sucked into. You find yourself rooting for her and you eventually see her start rooting for herself. Hidden in sarcastic comments and self-deprecating moments Holly is in tuned to the minds of most women who feel they rather build a wall full of what is expected instead of allowing what will happen to happen. Then things get real with professional fitness trainer Logan Montgomery.

“Do you have any physical ailments I need to consider?” He looked up from the folder in his hands.
“Yeah, I’m really fat.”
“Do you smoke?”
“Only when I’m on fire.”
“Drink?”
“Whenever I’m thirsty.” For emphasis, Holly opened her bottle of water and demonstrated, some water leaking out and dribbling down her chin into her shirt.
“Are you on drugs?”
“I’m on the pill; does that count?” Holly felt the heat rise up to her cheek, grateful he was too busy writing in her file to see it. A widow on the pill; it sounded like an announcement that she was open for business. Pg 37
Oh Logan. *pause for effect* In true swooner spirit you have to read this book just for him. The way Stephanie describes this tall tan slice of beef cake will send any woman running to the nearest gym with hopes of reenacting some of the pages from the book. Yes, he is your typical handsome hero to the rescue of the unbeknownst (gotta love spell check) damsel in distress but who cares! He’s hot and the things he does are even hotter.

“Then we better not waste any time.” Logan kissed her again, deeper, his strong arms peeling off her jacket and tossing it aside before pulling her in close again. His fingertips toyed with and then dipped slightly into the waistband of her jeans at the small of her back.
“I guess I’d look like a real dick if I took you right here without even offering you something to drink.” He reluctantly withdrew from her and grabbing her hand, led her toward the kitchen.
“Thirsty?”pg19
Now that I got that out of my system… let’s get to the heart of the man with the abs of delicious steel. He too goes through a change, so in many ways Holly rescues him as well.

Stephanie introduces Logan as this pompous, arrogant, man-whore. He exchanges women often and he never strays from his taste of tall, blonde, and model. When he meets Holly he immediately is disgusted and dreads the hours ahead of him next to her.  Only after hearing her story does he show a glimmer of the Logan you will guarantee love if not wish for by the end of the book. Merited solely on the purest of intentions Logan extends and offer that will change both their lives.

Stephanie gives Logan a guide sort of speak to help with his new found observations and it comes in the form of power couple Chase and Amanda Walker. Chase the golden boy of baseball and Amanda his self-sufficient mogul wife take a mentor role over Logan and usually keep his best interest in mind. Think big brother little sister pestering but with adults who have more money than they know what to do with. We learn little about the back story of Chase and Amanda but we do learn that there is a little bit of a scandal that brought them together. Think kink meets media. You can learn more about Chase and Amanda and their love story by reading “Sweet Spot” *insert shameless plug* the prequel to Big Girl Panties now available on paperback and ebook.

I know, I know, your reading this post and saying ok… you’re saying good things about the book but you only gave it 4/5 stars, what’s up with that? Well the reason is down to basics. The book is very predictable. I would have liked a twist of events or a cliff hanger of sorts but I was left wanting. Stephanie’s writing is that kin to a rom-com style and over time I see her honing her skills into something good.
So all in all if you want a good time, or looking just for a quick dose of smutty action, Big Girl Panties is a must.

"When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different, you know that your name is safe in their mouth." Jess C. Scott, The Intern

"I am not pretty. I am not beautiful. I am as radiant as the sun." Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games

"I believe in everything until it's disproved. So I believe in fairies, the myths, dragons. It all exists, even if it's in your mind. Who's to say that dreams and nightmares aren't as real as the here and now?" John Lennon

"Usually we walk around constantly believing ourselves. "I'm okay" we say. "I'm alright". But sometimes the truth arrives on you and you can't get it off. That's when you realize that sometimes it isn't even an answer--it's a question. Even now, I wonder how much of my life is convinced." Markus Zusak, The Book Thief

"It is an occupational hazard that anyone who has spent her life learning how to lie eventually becomes bad at telling the truth." Ally Carter, Heist Society

"I think that we are like stars. Something happens to burst us open; but when we burst open and think we are dying; we're actually turning into a supernova. And then when we look at ourselves again, we see that we're suddenly more beautiful than we ever were before!" C. JoyBell C.

"When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down 'happy'. They told me I didn't understand the assignment, and I told them they didn't understand life." John Lennon

REVIEW: I Become Shadow by Joe Shine~ BEA 2014

I Become Shadow by Joe Shine
Publication Date: June 10, 2014
Publisher: Soho Teen
Source: ARC received from Publisher at Book Expo America 2014
Buy it at: Amazon / Barnes and Noble

*This book was received from the publisher, but it did not influence this review in any way *

My rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Synopsis (from Goodreads):

Ren Sharpe was abducted at fourteen and chosen by the mysterious F.A.T.E Center to become a Shadow: the fearless and unstoppable guardian of a future leader. Everything she geld dear-her family, her home, her former life-is gone forever.

Ren survives four years of training, torture and misery, in large part thanks to Junie, a fellow F.A.T.E. abductee who started out as lost and confused as she did. She wouldn’t admit it was possible to find love in a prison beyond imaging, but what she feels for Junie may just be the closest thing to do.

At eighteen they part ways when Ren receives her assignment: find and protect college science student Gareth Young, or die trying. Life following a college nerd is uneventful, until an attack on Gareth forces Ren to track down the only person she can trust. When she and Junie discover that the F.A.T.E. itself might be behind the attacks, even certain knowledge of the future may not be enough to save their kidnappers from the killing machines they created.

Why did I love this book so much!?!?!?!?!

No seriously though. There were actually quite a few reasons why I was sure I wouldn’t like it…and I was right. I didn’t like it…I LOVED it!!!

This is a story about a girl who was abducted from her home and trained to be something else…this is a story about a secret organization that kidnaps children that are soon to be killed and uses them to protect the future important people of the world….this is a story about a beautiful blooming relationship between a boy and a girl who share one thing in common, they were kidnapped and trained to be killers. This is a story that has a lot of different stories within it and I love every one of them. Each aspect of this book was so well written that you can’t help but allow yourself to get so lost while reading, I was ensnared from the moment I opened the book.

Let’s start with Ren Sharpe. A fourteen year-old girl who is abducted from her home one night by a top secret organization and taken to a top secret facility. There she discovers that she was meant to be killed soon after she was taken and the organization actually saved her life. Juicy stuff right? So from there she is told that she will be trained to be a “Shadow” which is a person that will follow and protect the F.I.P (Future Important Person) for the rest of their lives, so that said person can achieve their great accomplishment that will change the world. Ren is such a great character because she's smart, strong, and brave. But her most endearing quality has to be her sarcasm. I mean let’s face it, this girl is a total smartass and total badass! And I LOVE that about her.

Then there’s Junie Miller. The boy who passively worked his way into my heart (and Ren’s) We learn so much from Junie about how to be brave and strong, and especially about how to be loyal. Junie is loyal to the point of endangerment. He has more than risked his life on several occasions to keep Ren safe. Gotta love a guy like that. Plus, that kiss scene…can you say swooooon?!?! He puts himself and his emotions aside constantly to keep her close. He embodies bravery and loyalty with every move he makes.

This story just grabs a hold of you and takes you along on this amazing journey. There are ups and downs and tons of in-betweens that make for a crazy and exciting story. Then, just when you think you’re done, the ending grabs a hold of you again and slaps you with a dose of frustration as you sit there gasping for air and gripping the pages, wondering what just happened and worrying that you may never get the answer.

For all our sakes, I hope the author gives us a sequel to end all sequels. Because I can’t imagine life living without these answers or these characters for at least a little while longer...

REVIEW: The House of Hades by Rick Riordan

The House of Hades (The Heroes of Olympus #4) by Rick Riordan
Publication Date: October 8, 2013
Publisher: Hyperion Books
Source: Book Purchased by Reviewer
Buy it at: Amazon / Barnes and Noble

My rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Synopsis (from Goodreads):

At the conclusion of The Mark of Athena, Annabeth and Percy tumble into a pit leading straight to the Underworld. The other five demigods have to put aside their grief and follow Percy’s instructions to find the mortal side of the Doors of Death. If they can fight their way through Gaea’s forces, and Percy and Annabeth can survive the House of Hades, then the Seven will be able to seal the Doors both sides and prevent the giants from raising Gaea. But, Leo wonders, if the Doors are sealed, how will Percy and Annabeth be able to escape?

They have no choice. If the demigods don’t succeed, Gaea’s armies will never die. They have no time. In about a month, the Romans will march on Camp Half-Blood. The stakes are higher than ever in this adventure that dives into the depths of Tartarus.

Yea, I pretty much loved, loved LOVED this book! And that dedication page…let’s not even talk about that page and how much joy I believe it gave Rick while writing it. I imagine him with a Grinch grin on his face while twirling his mustache handlebars and maniacally laughing at our expense. Cool? No. Hysterical? Abso-fricken-lutely!

There was so much action, drama and suspense in this book, as per his usual style of writing, but there was also some down time where the characters really got a chance to learn and grow as people. Those were the moments that I truly enjoyed because this is the first time that we see them become more than what they’ve been, more than the usual style of character that Rick loves to write. We see them as deep and pensive, not just fun and brave.

And yes, the relationship building was amazing! I love Percy and Annabeth’s (Percybeth?) relationship more than anything, and Jason and Piper get some serious growth this time around. Rick’s books have never let me down. I love how they take me to a completely different place each time I pick one up. And let me just say, that this particular place that I went to while reading this book was pretty darn DARK! Rick took this book to a completely different level than any of his others. All the chapters with Annabeth and Percy in The Pit were pretty intense. After all these years of reading about Tartarus and imaging what it would be like, we are finally able to venture down there and get to see firsthand what it’s really like. Well, we get to see a version of what it’s really like since the viewer has a distorted perception. With the help of Annabeth and Percy (and Rick of course!) we get a totally descriptive image of what Tartarus looks like (and smells like, and feels like) It’s amazing that I can honestly that it’s everything and nothing like how I always imagined it. And at some point, after a very dangerous encounter (one of many) Percy is so sounded and weak that he gets a glimpse beneath the veil that is down there and gets a real idea of what Tartarus is like. Let’s just say he’s happy to keep the veil tightly strapped over his mind because seeing the truth of it all is too destructive to his psyche!

Then of course there’s the emotional side of things. Rick completely shocked me this time around when he decided to script a few scenes that left me feeling sorrow and grief for what was lost aka Bob. I won’t say much about Bob, but I will say that he is probably the best friend a person could ask for. And…it totally broke my heart!!  So after a glass of wine and a few tears were shed, I was able to pull myself together and made the decision in that exact moment that the below scene was the best scene in the book, if only for the emotion it left me feeling. So here you go folks.

“Monsters are eternal,” she told him, trying to keep herself from sobbing. “We will remember you and Damasen as heroes, as the best Titan and the best Giant. We’ll tell our children. We’ll keep the story alive. Someday, you will regenerate.”

Bob ruffled her hair. Smile lines crinkled around his eyes. “That is good. Until then, my friends, tell the sun and the stars hello for me. And be strong. This may not be the last sacrifice you must make to stop Gaea.”

Seriously?! Did you just read that?! How are you not a ball of mush right now…here, let me pinpoint the exact part the broke me:

“…tell the sun and the stars hello for me”

So, yea. Insert a ball of mush and paste my face on it because I’m done folks. But before I go I’ll leave you with this: go out and read this if you haven’t. Get off your tushy and BUY THIS SERIES STAT!!!

P.S. I'm sorry this review was mostly on the whole Tartarus aspect of the book when there was actually so much more that happened. But alas, this is all my brain could focus on after finishing it. So if I have to be stuck in this head, so do you! Happy Swooning!
