Summary (from Goodreads):

How far will you go when you have nothing left to lose?

When she lost her soul mate, Caleb, Eve felt like her world had ended. Trapped in the palace, forced to play the part of the happy, patriotic princess of The New America – and the blushing bride of her father’s top adviser – Eve’s whole life is a lie. The only thing that keeps her going is Caleb’s memory, and the revolution he started.

Now, Eve is taking over where Caleb left off. With the help of Moss, as undercover subversive in the Kings court, she plots to take down The New America, beginning with the capital, the City of Sand. Will Eve be able to bring about a new, free world when shes called upon to perform the ultimate act of rebellion – killing her father?

In Rise, Eve must choose who to leave behind, who to save, and who to fight as Anna Carey’s epic tale of romance and sacrifice in the chilling dystopia of The New America comes to a stunning conclusion.

Hmmmm, what can I say about this book right now...let's start with WTH!??! I think I should probably explain what I mean by that, this review will be all over the place and in no way organized, as are my emotions right now!

I loved where the story started and where it was headed when I began reading the book. Then, as most series finales do, it took a turn down a path that it probably didn't really need to go. There isn't much I can say without dipping my feet into spoilery waters, but I will say that Eve goes through some physical (and emotional)  "changes" and needs to learn how to cope with many things, including the emotional distress of everything that happened with Caleb (you like how I did that right? ;] )

I love that we see Eve grow as a character from Book one of the series, Eve, to now. She has changed so much in so many ways but she never loses that innocence she had from the beginning. Everything is still so new to her and at the same time she seems so experienced. I love that the author was able to portray that in her writing. I also love that we finally, finally, finally get to see some more from Ruby and Pip. They were practically absent from the other two books so it's refreshing to see them now, before we say our goodbye. I just wish that we had more time with Arden. She's such an important character in both books before, that I can't believe we barely had any real time with her in the end of the series. Arden is the best friend I wish I had, the only person that I would've truly trusted had I been in Eve's place. So not giving her the time she deserved seems odd to me. Arden's talk with Eve is what started this whole thing, so she deserved a proper farewell. And of course, Caleb. There's so much to say about Caleb. My heart still beats for him, I wish that we had some real answers about everything that happened. I also wish we had more "time" with him in the book. He deserved a better goodbye that what he got. Which is to say, that he didn't really get a "goodbye" at all.

There are some things that happen along the way to their "freedom" that I wasn't all that impressed with either. Mostly, the fate of a certain character. Also, the ending really upset me. I mean, it actually upset me. I had one of those moments where I just had to slowly rise from the book, really thinking about what I just read. Kind of like this:

Then there was this "flips table in frustration" moment, kind of like this (only angrier):

So yea, the ending was not AT ALL how I imagined it would be. In my mind, the last three chapters should've ended differently, but especially that last line. THAT LAST LINE!!!

Yea, this is me:

(I didn't really do this, but internally it's what I was feeling)

Of course, don't get me wrong. Overall, I loved the story and the series. I just feel like there were so many things that I never got closure on that I kind of really needed closure. But the series, as a whole, was awesome and I highly recommend it!

  1. Great review! I really enjoyed ONCE, but got bored by the second installment. If this is your reaction, I think I might pick it up! I don't like series that end without closure though...
